The Isle of Berneray
The Isle of Berneray derives its name from the Old Norse Bjarnar-øy, which means either "Bjorn's island" or possibly "bear island".
The island is situated in the Sound of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland and has a permanent population of around 110 people.
We are an active and busy community, with Gaelic still spoken widely and the main sources of employment being crofting, fishing, fish farming and tourism.
The west side of Berneray is one long uninterrupted white sandy beach bordered by a machair full of wild flowers. A respectful approach to agriculture through generations of crofting has ensured that the delicate ecology has been maintained and the island is still a wealth of flora and fauna.
